The Health Physics Tech under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer, assists in the implementation and support of the radiation protection program throughout Albany Medical Center. This includes supporting the diagnostic and therapeutic clinical use of radioactive material and radiation-producing equipment across AMC Hospital and College facilities.
Responsible for implementation of the radioactive package receipt program which include communication with the pharmacy for expected delivers and unexpected delays, delivery of reusable cases for exchange, recite of material following package receipt and DOT protocols, and recording these recites on appropriate spread sheet.
Oversee and implement all aspects of our radioactive waste program. This includes processing and recording long lived waste and managing the decay-in-storage program. Keep accurate spreadsheet records of these activities on the shared drive.
Oversee the radioactive waste detection program in CURE waste. This includes daily checks and removal of material detected, ensuring that equipment is working appropriately. and frequent communication with CURE waste staff. - - Monitor radiological conditions in spaces assigned to the Radiation Safety Department. Ensure measured exposure levels are within regulatory limits and perform weekly wipe samples to maintain ALARA taking appropriate remedial actions and notifications, as needed.
Perform contamination surveys in academic laboratories using radioactive materials at a frequency required by regulations and good radiation protection practice or to coincide with quarterly audits. Surveys include wipe tests, meter surveys, preparation of samples for counting, interpretation and documentation of results, and appropriate follow-up with laboratory personnel. Remedial actions may require support in addition to technical advice.
Assist in the calibration of radiation detecting equipment at required frequencies and maintenance of proper documentation of such calibrations.
Maintain the inventory of all laboratory supplies necessary for daily operation of the radiation protection program.
Assist in performing and documenting required inventories and leak tests of all sealed radioactive sources at Albany Medical Center.
Assist in radiation safety planning and implementation of in-patient therapy procedures involving radioactive materials including room preparations, posting, surveys, decontamination and release. Assist in Y-90 microsphere therapies to include preparation of cart supplies.
Respond to radiological emergencies. Provide after-hours on-call coverage.- Perform other duties, as requested, including emergency planning and response, support for regulatory inspections, and participation on Albany Medical Center’s Hazardous Materials Emergency Response team.
