The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics at Albany Medical College (AMC) is seeking a board-certified (BC)/board-eligible (BE) genetic counselor for the Prenatal Genetics and Cancer Genetics services at the Department of OB/GYN, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Albany Med Health System.

The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics at Albany Medical College is currently comprised of two Medical Clinical Geneticists, three Genetic Counselors (Two General Genetics, One Prenatal/Cancer Genetics), one Nurse Practitioner, a Physician Assistant, a Genetic Nurse (metabolic), a Dietician (metabolic), and an LPN. The comprehensive genetic program at our center provides genetic services for all age groups including General Genetics, Biochemical Genetics (Metabolic disorders/ Newborn Screening Program), Prenatal Genetics, Cancer Genetics, and Pharmacogenomics.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Prepares charts, consultation notes and communication notes; completes case preparation prior to appointments.

  • Assesses family history, and counsels’ patients and/or families about genetic risk assessment in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects; assists families to comprehend the diagnosis, probable course of the disorder, and available testing and management strategies.

  • Evaluates patient information and history and determines appropriate course for genetic testing, if applicable; ensures that patients and/or families understand implications, risks, and benefits of testing; assists the physician in the process of obtaining informed consent for genetic testing

  • Provides related counseling in regard to psychosocial and ethical issues that arise due to the genetic condition

  • Explains the results and potential implications of genetic evaluation/testing

  • Refers individuals and families to support services and funding agencies

  • Documents patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patients; documents cases and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality

  • Teaches and supervises training activities of residents, medical students, and/or other health care professionals

  • Creates informational and educational materials, for patients, families, health care providers and the general community

  • Contributes to the development and support of clinically related genetics research

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Genetic Counseling, Human Genetics, or Nursing with certification/credential in genetics

  • 3 years experience in clinical genetic counseling

  • Board Certification in Genetic Counseling or equivalent

  • Computer experience
