National Grid Lead Quantity Surveyor in St Neots, United Kingdom

About the role

We are looking for Lead Quantity Surveyors to join our Customer Connections (CC) team based in our North region ( North Wales, North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber), Central region (Midlands and East Anglia) and South region (South Wales and Bristol, Oxfordshire, London, Kent) . These roles require a hybrid working approach with a mix of home, site and office working.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the UK’s transition to clean energy within our Customer Connections (CC) team as a Lead Quantity Surveyor, where you will provide commercial and contractual support to project teams on large- scale infrastructure projects. You’ll enjoy great variety and the chance to work on some of the biggest, most exciting projects in green energy. If you’re an experienced Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor who wants more responsibility and the chance to work on high-value, complex schemes, we’d like to hear from you.

Our customers include everyone who uses electricity in England and Wales. Acting on behalf of these people, you’ll help ensure that we deliver our projects in the most commercially effective way.

The role could provide the right person with a fantastic stepping stone into management. As a Lead Quantity Surveyor you will be the link between management and more junior Quantity Surveyors and you may also be responsible for the line management of a small team.

You’ll be welcomed into our diverse, inclusive organisation that has recently won an Institution of Engineering and Technology silver award for our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programme. If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, we look forward to talking to you very soon.

What you'll be doing

This is not a project specific role, and you’ll be working with the Commercial Manager to assist in the development and continuous improvement of robust commercial functions, deputising when necessary to sign-off decisions required as part of our internal governance processes.

You’ll lead in reviewing entitlements and assessing the time and cost impact of complex compensation events, providing sound and reasoned advice to project teams to assist in the resolution of any complex contractual disputes, and when appropriate you will challenge decisions made by the project team, to resolve disputes in a timely manner.

You’ll support and manage others in procurement events, including the commercial assessment of tenders and advise on the most suitable procurement route. You will lead negotiations on contract deviations, depending on the nature of the contract, and suggest post-contract amendments to deliver the best value for National Grid.

You’ll ensure junior team members comply with contractual obligations in the payment application process, challenge the project team in their compilation of forecasts, and ensure they follow internal governance processes and procedures, with effective management of risk, accurate cost reporting and forecasting.

You’ll ensure good communication between stakeholders, communicating succinctly and consistently, reaching out to senior stakeholders for assistance when it is needed. You may be responsible for reviewing and managing junior members of staff on smaller projects and allocating projects to members of the team.

What you'll need

Methodical and process driven, you are good at gathering data and information to accurately assess an issue or event. You can analyse complex disputes to arrive at a reasoned decision and are flexible enough to pick up new challenges at short notice.

You can deal positively with people at all levels of business, including management, succinctly presenting facts and providing contractual advice. You can mentor others and develop their skills to build the overall capability of a team.

You are confident in making independent decisions using your own skill and judgement, and willing to challenge the decisions made by others.

You have a degree in quantity surveying or a related discipline such as construction management or construction law. You have extensive experience of quantity surveying and a strong understanding of NEC contracts.

We’d like you to already be a Chartered Surveyor, or at least working towards becoming one. Ideally you have experience on infrastructure projects, but this isn’t essential. You might have a contractor or consultant background, for example.

You also have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK. There is an expectation that you’ll be able to travel to site as and when required, but as part of our hybrid working model you’ll also have the flexibility to work from home, a National Grid office, or site.

What you'll get

Starting salary of £56,000 - £71,000 dependant on experience – plus an additional Market Supplement of £3,000

  • Salary, Market Supplement and Annual Performance Based Bonus.

  • 25 days annual leave (increasing to 26 after two years’ service) plus eight statutory days.
