Two major research foci are the pathogenesis of sleep apnea and the metabolic/cardiovascular complications of sleep disorders. The pathogenesis studies include anatomical ones using imaging, upper airway physiology, and control of breathing. These studies are ultimately designed to define the various contributors to apnea in different individuals. The ultimate goal is to define specific therapeutic targets for OSA patients of varying phenotypes. The rat/mouse model studies are exploring the neurochemistry of the various components of upper airway reflexes with an eventual goal of defining potential pharmacological targets for OSA therapy. The metabolic/cardiovascular studies seek to separate obesity effects from OSA influences by assessing a host of autonomic, microcirculatory, inflammatory, hemostatic, metabolic, and hemodynamic variables.

Under the general supervision of the SRA V, study physician and/or primary investigator (PI), the Sleep Research Technician will participate in the development and implementation of new research protocols including data collection systems and computer acquisition configurations. Working very independently, will perform non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures taking care of all technical and logistical aspects applicable to a diversity of complex physiological research studies. These procedures include but are not limited to: epiglottis catheter placement, genioglossus recordings, arousal threshold determinations, loop gain/pcrit measurements and performance of polysomnographic sleep studies. Other responsibilities include: calibrate and maintain the laboratory equipment, troubleshooting technical issues as they arise; perform advanced data analysis and analytical reviews using appropriate statistical techniques; score sleep studies in a timely manner for data analysis as well as provide significant independent innovative contributions pertaining to the design and modification of research protocols making appropriate recommendations to the supervisor and /or PI as needed; compose and present sections of research reports and manuscripts; develop and organize the study databases and data backups.

The Sleep Research Technician is also responsible for instructing new staff members from different career backgrounds in the proper use of highly specialized techniques and equipment, while working in conjunction with the investigator(s) in the general oversight of junior staff and all laboratory activities to ensure obtaining quality and accurate study data. Participate in subject recruitment scheduling and setting up study appointments with subjects making independent judgment of suitability and implementing adequate recruitment strategies as per study protocol. Perform all other duties as required.
