Job Posting: JOB SUMMARY:

The candidate will be responsible for all stages of histology-related tissue processing: including processing, embedding, sectioning, staining as well as quality control/quality assurance. The candidate will also be responsible for laboratory management-related duties including: maintaining and ordering supplies for the lab, tracking the flow of histology jobs thought the lab, generating and submitting recharge invoices, and communicating with client staff and faculty as needed. Experience with special histological stains, enzyme histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry are highly desirable.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform procedures (approximately 55% effort): Perform procedures within the scope of practice for a Senior Histotechnologist/Research Technologist, including: (i) proper special fixative procedures, ensuring proper tissue processing, evaluation of unstained section quality, correctly' preparing special stains and solutions, correctly performing and evaluating special stains, and various other specialized histology-related procedures; (ii) prepare microscopic slides from animal and human tissues, including grossing, embedding/tissue orientation, sectioning of tissue paraffin blocks, sectioning of fresh frozen, fixed frozen tissue with preparation of microscopic slides, staining (manual and automated) and submission of slides to investigator/client; (iii) analyze and correct problems and complete all tasks within targeted turn-around times.

Laboratory management (approximately 20% effort): Customer service, histology troubleshooting, supervision and daily duty assignments for 1-2 histotechnologists in the histology lab. Tracking job progress, job workflow management, lab organization including: maintaining detailed records of projects and lab supplies, ensuring optimal turn-around time of lab projects, maintaining and operating laboratory equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and procedures. Obtaining sales quotes for lab equipment and supplies, reviews and adjusts expenses to decrease costs. Oversees repair and maintenance of all lab equipment. Ensures that lab supplies are ordered, ready and available when necessary. Creates and maintains lab manuals related to operating, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Project management (approximately 10% of effort): Accessioning new projects, tracking progress and ensuring optimal turn-around time on completed jobs. Oversee and manage lab databases, including ensuring that experiments are properly logged and that data are collected and entered correctly.

Training and Development (approximately 10% of effort): Assist research clients with histology-related experiments including mouse necropsy questions and procedures. Respond to email inquiries and maintaining laboratory communication and project update with investigators' lab staff as required.

Lab Safety (approximately 5% of effort): Follow established blood borne pathogen safety and hazardous materials handling procedures and standard precautions at all times. Monitor and ensure proper disposal of biohazardous wastes/hazardous chemicals following laboratory safety guidelines consistent with CSMC and Environmental Health Safety requirements

Minimal education requirements:

I. BS degree, in biology, chemistry or health related field or equivalent.

2. Candidate must have 3+ years in a research laboratory setting and must have strong histology training, with proven ability to efficiently process, embed, cut and stain paraffin and frozen tissue sections.

Minimum competencies:

1. Must have computer and medical terminology skills.

2. Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

3. Ability to perform well in a team-oriented, fast paced environment

License/Certification/Registration Requirements:

ASCP HT certification or equivalent

Experience:

5+ years’ experience in a research laboratory setting

2. 5+ years’ experience in processing specimen samples and histology

3. 5+ years good laboratory practices

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift 20 pounds

Work with flammable chemicals and high/low temperature equipment
