National Grid Head of UK Regulatory Strategy in London, United Kingdom

About Us

National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system, spanning the UK and the US. Our businesses supply gas and electricity, safely, reliably and efficiently to millions of customers and communities. But we also drive change through engineering innovation and by incubating new ideas with the power to revolutionise our industry.

At National Grid, we share the belief that we need to stand for something beyond profit. We have a responsibility to demonstrate our contribution to society more broadly, whether that’s helping the young people of today to become the energy problem-solvers of tomorrow, supporting our customers to use energy more efficiently, or tackling climate change by targeting net zero for our own emissions by 2050. That’s why our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future.

About The Role

As a leader within the Strategy and Regulation function in our group headquarters function, you will work with the National Grid Executive and Board to develop the medium to long term regulatory strategy that will allow the organisation to realise its strategic ambition and growth prospects.

A fundamental component of this will involve establishing and working with a broad network of cross-sectoral internal and external stakeholders to understand, shape and define changes to the regulatory landscape, focussing on the UK.

Your primary responsibility will be to set the strategic direction for the UK Regulatory Strategy team. You will lead a team in developing and executing the regulatory strategy through provision of structured and insightful strategic advice to the Plc Board, CEO and Executive Team – and work with the Executive Teams of each of the UK Business Units to ensure robust strategy activation plans are in place and followed through.

Key Accountabilities

As part of this critical role your accountabilities will include:

  • Understanding the macro and micro political, socio and economic factors that will impact the regulatory landscape, working closely with the Corporate Strategy department and the Regulation teams in our UK business units (Electricity Transmission, Strategic Infrastructure, Electricity Distribution and National Grid Ventures).

  • Understanding our commercial and competitive environment and how to generate value from a regulatory perspective and using this to inform the development of our UK regulatory strategy.

  • Managing a portfolio of regulatory reform projects which are designed to transform the UK regulatory framework so that it supports the Net Zero transition. This includes identifying links and cross-cutting issues and being able to look across all our business units to develop group-level positions on regulatory reform.

  • Contributing to a positive relationship with Ofgem, working closely with our UK business units.

  • Establishing a centre of excellence in cross sector regulatory knowledge and skillsets; understanding the potential applications in energy and taking ownership for a strategy to grow our regulatory capabilities across our UK business units.

  • Leading a team that provides high quality qualitative & quantitative research to support decision making.

About You

We are looking for experienced candidates who possess the following:

  • A regulation expert, with experience of developing and interacting with regulatory frameworks either in the energy sector or other heavily regulated environment such as water, telecoms or financial services.

  • A strong strategic thinker, with the ability to see the big picture, but also address shorter term more tactical issues. Strategic ability should be balanced by a strong understanding of the operational and commercial challenges faced by a business and the factors which can derail the successful implementation of a strategy.

  • Considerable breadth and depth of experience of strategy formulation and analysis in large and complex corporate environments. The ideal candidate will have strategy experience developed either in a consultancy or corporate environment.

  • Ability to work with and influence board, executive level and senior leaders within an organisation, and engage effectively at multiple levels across an organisation.

  • Ability to challenge entrenched thinking in a constructive manner; a willingness and openness to receiving similar challenge.

  • Ability to lead and coach a team to allow them to meet their full potential.

  • Experience in working with regulatory finance components and understanding their interactions with broader corporate finance priorities would be beneficial.
