This position is that of a sub-journeyman Utility Systems Repairer Operator (USRO). The position is located at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Office of the Director, Chief Facilities Management Officer, Facilities Maintenance division, Steam and Chilled Water Generation Plant Group (193.06). This position is subjected to work on a rotating shift.

This position requires some knowledge to maintain boilers and associated equipment or chillers and associated equipment. The incumbent performs chemical tests and assists with alignment of various pumps and motors. He / She must have some knowledge of kind and quality of materials needed to repair and maintain various equipment. Maintains equipment in buildings not directly served by the S&CWGP; but fall under its responsibility. Obtains necessary materials from storeroom and cleans job sites after completion of work.

Qualifications

There are no specific lengths or level of experience requirements. The applicant's overall background of experience, education and training must clearly demonstrate the ability to perform utility systems repairer operator duties, specifically the ability to assist with operation and maintenance of high pressure central plant steam boiler and large capacity air condition compressors/chiller without more than normal supervision. All applicants will be rated on the following Job Elements:

  • Ability to perform USRO duties without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)

  • Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation., testing, repair

  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, drawings and blueprints.

  • Technical practices (Theoretical, precise, artistic)

Applicants must meet the screen out element and score at least fifty (50%) or higher in each element category.
