L153 Jewelry Technician Grade 103, Temporary (71104) Location: Brooklyn, NY Description: Under the general supervision of the Fine Arts Operations Manager, the Temporary Jewelry technician will support the day-to-day running of the Fine Arts Department's Jewelry shop. The Jewelry technician will join a team committed to fostering a safe, innovative, and robust culture of creating and will provide students with practical technical support that will guide their practice in and beyond their time at Pratt. Position Duties: Equipment and Facilities Management Oversee the safe operation, set-up, inspection, and maintenance of equipment and tools, performing troubleshooting relating to the repair and installation of shop equipment and technologies. Oversee inventory, secure price quotes, and order supplies as needed. Where applicable, coordinate the equipment, labs, and shops' check-in/check-out and reservation process. Implement a pedagogy for shop safety orientation. Conduct shop safety orientations. Partner with the facilities department to ensure the shop's proper functioning, coordinating as necessary to troubleshoot plumbing, electrical issues, hazardous waste pick-up, heat regulation, and other maintenance issues. Manage lab fee budget and distribution of materials to students. Staff and Student Supervision Supervise daily student and faculty work in the shop and its related satellite resources, providing technical guidance and support for faculty teaching in the shop. Hire, train, and supervise student employees in safely handling and basic operation of shop equipment and tools. Collaborate with the department head in developing and implementing training materials, procedures, policies, and services for student employees, student users, and staff and faculty working in the shop. Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Coordination and Support Participate in regular team meetings to support the overall use of facilities and resources. Where applicable, support web content creation, revision, and continuous improvement, providing clear, up-to-date, and user-friendly information regarding lab/shop policies, scheduling, hours, instruction, and programming opportunities. Support the continuous improvement of resources and facilities by making recommendations and performing research. For technical instruction beyond the scope of standard technical guidance, academic departments can request workshops for more complex technical training as part of routine curriculum planning. Participation in workshop coordination (i.e., scheduling, preparation, etc.) is obligatory; instruction is voluntary. With no shorter than a month's advance notice, the (Department Head/Director) can schedule workshops to support curricular goals to be coordinated during class time. Workshops will be compensated as an academic stipend and must occur outside of working hours, not to exceed ten hours per semester. Qualifications: Education: A bachelors degree in a related field or equivalent work experience is required. A certificate of fitness or safety license may be required if applicable to the shop. Experience: Minimum of five years of related experience and thorough knowledge of the facilitys equipment. Skills: Understanding of health and safety regulations, both Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Institutional. Knowledge of safety procedures required to handle gas, acids, kilns, investments, resins, and power equipment. Proficient with Word and Excel, with knowledge of Adobe and Google Drive. Comprehensive knowledge of new manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing and laser cutting. Demonstrate comprehensive skills in hard soldering, casting, electroforming, etching, enameling, and laser welding using hand tools and power equipment. Other: There is occasional weekend work during the spring and fall semesters, and occasional overtime may be required at the end of each semester. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications, ranging from $58,000 to $60,000 . This position will be onsite 5 days a week. This is a union-represented LOCAL 153 TECHNICAL STAFF position.
