Under general supervision, performs heavy custodial and grounds work, including the operation of heavy equipment, to provide proper maintenance and repair of a building and grounds; performs related work as required. Problem solving involves creative thinking when needs arise, using past experiences to guide decision making when appropriate, and flexible learning styles.

Responsibilities

  • Clean windows, walls, woodwork, offices, corridors, classrooms, study rooms, practice rooms, staff lounges, conference rooms, hallways, stairways, elevators, entrances, auditoriums, tunnel areas, laboratories, bathrooms, other rooms and general facilities so that the campus is maintained in a sanitary and safe condition on a daily basis. Clean trash and refuse from grounds. Empty trash and recycle bins.

  • Performs groundskeeping and landscaping to maintain existing land and/or to prepare grounds for minor renovation by operating chainsaws, lawnmowers, trucks, tractors, power sprayers, and other heavy power equipment. Maintains road surfaces, parking lots and sidewalks by clearing snow and refuse using tractors, turcks, other machinery equipped with plows, sweepers, or other attachments; manually shoveling snow; and operating snow blowing equipment.

  • Loads and unloads supplies, materials, and equipment to provide necessary transportation, storage, and distribution of items by manually lifting and carrying materials as required. Includes moving furniture, setting up for campus events and delivering supplies.

  • Performs repairs on buildings (doors, locks, windows, fixtures), grounds structures (fences, posts, signs), and equipment (hand tools and equipment) to ensure safety standards and/or maintenance schedules are properly followed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Vaid Driver‘s License

  • Knowledge of:

  • Groundskeeping practices, sufficient to plant, fertilize, and prune trees, plants, shrubs, and grass

  • Hand, power tools, and equipment sufficient to safely and effectively operate and perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs

  • Cleaning methods, techniques, materials, and equipment sufficient to prepare cleaning solutions and compounds, operate cleaning equipment and perform minor repairs

  • Basic building fixtures (doors, locks, windows) and grounds structures (fences, signs) sufficient to perform minor maintenance and installation work

  • Safety and accident prevention measures sufficient to identify safety hazards, make necessary repairs, and/or alert appropriate personnel

  • Ability to:

  • Understand and follow oral and writen instructions

  • Record information to complete routine, recurring records and reports

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good human relations‘ skills, work habits and self-motivation

  • Ability to effectively use college‘s computerized work order system

  • Ability to effectively use college‘s email system

  • Ability to effectively use State‘s human resource system to track hours of work, leave, etc

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to operate heavy motorized grounds, maintenance, and construction equipment and vehicles.

  • Ability to move heavy objects (e.g., furniture, posts, equipment, etc) and use ladders scaffolding, etc.

  • Ability to maintain a stationary position for long periods of time, move throughout campus, and transport heavy objects.

  • Capable of pushing and pulling and repetitive activities.

Additional Requirements

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State‘s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
